Subject: Press Conference for the presentation of the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships “Cagliari 2018”
It was held yesterday, Monday 11 of June 2018, in the City Council hall of Cagliari, the press conference for the presentation of X edition of the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in program from 17 to 24 of June 2018 that will involve, in addition to the sports facilities of the city of Cagliari, also the sport venues, public and private in some municipalities of the Metropolitan City such as Quartu Sant’Elena, Maracalagonis, Selargius and Monserrato. The event is promoted by ETDSF (European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Federation) which has entrusted the task, for the first time in Italy, to the Forum Sport Italia Nazionale Italiana, a sports promotion organization for transplanted and dialysed, headed by Giuseppe Canu with the valuable contribution offered by Rete Mice Sardegna. At the press conference were present: Yuri Marcialis, the Sport Assessor for the municipality of Cagliari Giuseppe Canu the Local Organization Commitee President of ETDSC (European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships) Gianfranco Fara, the President of Coni Sardegna Antonello Pani, the responsible for the medical staff of the Championships and manager of Nephrology at the “San Michele” hospital Francesca Zorcolo, director of the Regional Transplant Center Luigi Minerba, general manager of ASL 8 of Cagliari.
The numbers of “Cagliari 2018”
There are 25 European National teams that will participate to the event “Cagliari 2018”, out of the 31 that belong to European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Federation. For the first time will be present Russia, with two athletes and Kazaksthan with 6. The sports disciplines are 13 Badminton, Darts, Mini Marathon, Tennis, Cycling, Table Tennis, Petanque, Bowling, Golf, Archery, Virtual Triathlon, that, with swimming and track and field, bring the specialties total to 40. The registration system counted 468 participants, of which 339 are athletes. All others are between team managers, team physicians, coaches and supporters. In the end, 846 medals will be distributed between gold, silver and bronze. The Championships of “Cagliari 2018” have set a new record for partecipation, 2 years ago at Vantaa, in Finland, for example, the registered athletes were 352 remembering that at the same time, two others sport events took place, the Championships for heart transplanted, that usually have a separate competitions and this year will take place in Udine and the European Sport Week for junior and children.
The athletes in the junior category (up to 14 years) registered to “Cagliari 2018” are 13. The younger partecipant is a 10 years old girl from Poland, liver transplanted. The oldest competitor is John Mcaleer, an 80 years old Irish athlete. Among “the veterans”, there are also two italians, Enrico dell’Acqua 76 years old and the sardinian tennis player, Nino Satta 74 years old. Among women, the oldest, is Anna Bergant Povše 72 years old slovenian athlete.
